Peace & Calm in the Face of Death – Lee Strobel

Summit Ministries

Lee Strobel shares how Jesus offered him a profound sense of security during a time when his life was in question.

I almost died about a decade ago and my wife found me unconscious and called an ambulance. I woke up in the emergency room and the doctor looked at me and said, “You’re one step away from a coma, two steps away from dying.” And I hovered between life and death for quite a while before the doctors were able to save me.

And when you’re in that situation, when you don’t know if you’re going to close your eyes for the last time in this world, nothing is more important, more reassuring, more beautiful than to reach out and talk to the Jesus who’s walked you through so many other crises in your life. Who has guided and led your life, who’s giving you wisdom and giving you insights that have enriched your life.

To be able to reach out to that Jesus in this moment of crisis and say, “I don’t know what’s going to happen. I’m scared.” And and to have him through the Holy Spirit bring a sense of calm and a sense of peace and a sense of security. Getting through that was a was a spiritual experience that has affected the rest of my life, because I would go through something these days that’s a setback, a difficulty, a financial problem or whatever and I look, “But I remember when I was in that hospital bed and the doctors didn’t know if I was going to live and God came through for me then, and Jesus came through for me then. I think he can come through this time as well. So it changes everything.
