Why We Can’t Agree on Moral Issues | Dr. Paul Gould

Why is it so difficult to agree about controversial moral issues?

Dr. Paul Gould explains that many of today’s most difficult ethical debates involve two different kinds of disagreement: disagreements about facts and disagreements about values. Thinking clearly about morality requires understanding both.

Using abortion as an example, Gould shows how questions about the nature of human persons and when life begins intersect with competing values such as the right to life and personal autonomy. Even when people agree that certain values matter, they may rank those values differently—and those differences can dramatically shape their ethical conclusions.

Rather than avoiding difficult and controversial subjects, Christians should learn to slow down, examine the facts, identify the values at stake, and thoughtfully wrestle with how those values should be prioritized.

Ultimately, ethics isn’t merely about winning arguments. It’s about becoming the kind of people who think deeply about how we ought to live and what contributes to genuine human flourishing.
