The Summit Oxford Study Centre is an educational program combining the unique worldview approach of Summit Ministries with the academic strengths of Oxford, England.

At Summit Oxford you will study with Oxford tutors. These are not lectures but concentrated and personalized tutorials with world-class scholars. You are inducted into the realms of Oxford life and enabled to foster your skills of research, analysis and communication. Among other areas, you may study facets of literature or law, politics or philosophy, theology, the arts or sciences.

What makes Summit Oxford unique among study abroad programs is the 4-week worldview course with Kevin James Bywater. Intensively interactive, any question or issue may be put on the table. Close reading of various texts is a central activity. The conversations are many, open, engaging and authentic. In addition to this intensive, throughout the Oxford term there are weekly worldview colloquia and personalized mentoring sessions. 

This is a profound opportunity to develop skills, character and understanding, to propel you forward with all the courage of your Christian convictions. Here you will prayerfully ponder the past, press in to the present, and pursue your intellectual potential. The goal is informed and faithful scholarship for church and culture. 

The Summit Oxford course runs concurrently and in tandem with Oxford tutorial studies provided through the Oxford Study Abroad Program. The combination is a substantial 8-week summer program, or 15-week autumn and winter program. In coordination with home institutions, students may receive upwards of 9 credit hours for the summer term, and 18 credit hours for Michalemas (autumn) or Hilary (winter) term.

Summer Term Distinctives

A number of questions attend the purpose and effectiveness of the Summit Oxford Summer Term. Up front, it must be noted that it is not equal with the other terms. Food costs will be approximately half, though travel expenses are likely to be equal or perhaps greater (due to the time of travel being summer). The Summer Term presents several advantages:

  • It is less expensive than a full term.
  • It requires less of a time commitment.
  • It provides access to the various Oxford libraries, including the Bodleian.
  • It provides 90% of the worldview intensive with Kevin Bywater.
  • It is at a time of the year more accessible to students who otherwise have term schedules and curricular calendars that disallow them from participating in the fuller terms during the normal school year.

The questions one must ask and answer to determine whether the Summer Term is best suited to the student are:

  • Is it a matter of timing? If a students’ curricular schedule does not permit participation in a full term, then the Summer Term would be the only viable option. However, one must determine if the advantages and disadvantages warrant the financial expenditure.
  • Is it a matter of cost? The overall cost of the Summer Term (including tuition, travel, and food) is estimated to be $9000 less than a full term.
  • What does the students want to achieve from a term in Oxford? In particular, is the student more interested in the worldview intensive (due to Kevin’s or Summit’s reputation), or in the Oxford tutorial experience? If the latter is the reason, then one would benefit much more from one of the full terms. If the former is the reason, then rest assured that students will enjoy a serious and sustained worldview intensive during the Summer Term. However, given that time in Oxford is 50% of the normal term, the mentoring relationship will be somewhat diminished, and the time to ruminate on what is being read and discussed may be truncated.

The Summit Oxford program runs during three terms: Michaelmas (September-December), Hilary (January-April), and the shorter Summer (June-August) Term. Studying with Summit Oxford provides you with opportunities to bolster your academic abilities and credentials. The program comprises two coordinated elements: a worldview course and Oxford tutorials.

Worldview Course

The worldview course is a rich combination of reading, seminar discussions, lectures, and investigative outreach. Students discover, assess, synthesize, and communicate their findings in oral and written forms, in larger groups and in one-on-one conversations. The bulk of the course runs before or after the Oxford term.

In conjunction with cultural information and advice provided by the Oxford Study Abroad Program (or OSAP, a long-standing Oxford study abroad organization with whom Summit Oxford has partnered), Summit Oxford provides introductions and insights about the religious life of Oxford in particular, and England and Europe more widely.

The worldview course provides discussions of the interpretation of the Bible and other important texts, a variety of worldviews with notable presence in the West (including discussions of origins, texts, populations, etc.), a series of challenging readings (in theology, politics, economics, history, science, culture, etc.), conversations with guest speakers and conference calls with accomplished scholars and authors.

Among other objectives, students will gain, develop, and cultivate:

  • abilities to investigate and discover the origins, sources (e.g. documents), and significant convictions of worldviews commonly encounterd in western civilization (e.g. Islam, pseudo-Christian religions);
  • knowledge of how these worldviews (or their constituent elements) impact the personal convictions and practices of their adherents, as well as features of culture, such as relationships, philosophy, laws and politics;
  • abilities to appreciate how adherents of various worldviews gain and hold their convictions vis-à-vis the Bible and other sources of religious authority (e.g., Qur’an);
  • enhanced abilities to interpret texts and assess alternative readings (hermeneutics);
  • increased abilities to perceive, investigate and understand worldview convictions of others, and this with a missional perspective and posture;
  • increased abilities to convey one’s own worldview convictions with clarity in speech and writing, and that with attention to how these communications (verbal and otherwise) may be perceived by others;
  • development of a self-reflective attitude and a willingness to reconsider the content and form of one’s own worldview convictions, especially in conversation with other Christians with somewhat differing convictions.

Studying in Oxford, England, provides students with opportunities for cross-cultural experiences in a context related to their native language. It presents ample occasions to worship with, to encourage, and to be edified by the body of Christ in another country. As a multicultural center, most Oxford churches host internationals (both Christians and non-Christians), providing a trusting and friendly atmosphere for building and cultivating relationships.

Oxford Tutorials

Students enjoy at least two Oxford tutorials—one primary and the other secondary (Summer Term students take a truncated primary tutorial). The primary tutorial occurs weekly, the secondary tutorial fortnightly.

While optional lectures may be attended, the Oxford tutorial is personalized, intensive, and highly instructive. The tutorial requires students to practice scholarship themselves. Tutorial meetings are at least one hour in length, usually focused on an essay the student has produced. Students discuss their investigations at length with their tutors. Tutors may introduce new material, recommend avenues of investigation, challenge students’ perceptions or ambiguities. As developing scholars, students are expected to have informed opinions: to explain, perhaps modify, and certainly defend them. Then students are tasked with another essay and provided with an initial bibliography.

The Oxford essay ranges between five and fifteen pages, depending on the tutor’s demands, the subject at hand, and the aggressiveness of the student. By the end of the term, students have produced ten or twelve such essays, resulting in a significant body of written work and untold pages of research. In short, the Oxford tutorial system is unsurpassed in providing students the chance to discover, engage, and cultivate the habits of scholarship.

Credits and Credit Transfer

It is important to get approval from the study abroad office and/or academic department of your home campus to ensure the credits you earn while studying with Summit Oxford will transfer toward the degree from your home university.  And while the number of credits you earn is entirely at the discretion of your home university, most students receive upwards of 18 American credit hours for Michalemas and Hilary Terms, and 9 credits for the Summer Term.

Upon completion of the Summit Oxford programme, students will be issued a transcript from OSAP detailing completed tutorials and associated grades. This, in combination with a tutorial report (prepared by your Oxford tutor) is, in the vast majority of cases, sufficient evidence for your home university to award credit. To date, OSAP has relationships with over 600 U.S. universities in this regard.

If your home university requires a transcript from an accredited North American institution of higher education, this is available through the University of the Pacific (CA), with whom OSAP has worked closely for many years. OSAP is able to enroll Summit Oxford students as overseas students of the University of the Pacific and grant successful students an accredited U.S. transcript which will normally be accepted for credit transfer by other U.S. universities. Students must apply to the University of the Pacific before they come to Oxford by letting Summit Oxford know that they would like this U.S. transcript.

There are additional costs for travel to and from Oxford, food (which you may find at a subsidized rate at your Oxford college), deposits for housing, and other such costs. Please consider all possible costs while planning your term. Financial assistance is available on a limited basis.

Living in England for nearly four months provides many cross-cultural experiences, though without the burden of navigating a foreign language. Oxford is truly a multicultural city. With many families and even more students arriving from numerous countries and cultures around the world, there are abundant chances to learn from and relate to others unfamiliar with Western values or Christian convictions.

There also are several vibrant evangelical churches in Oxford, presenting wonderful opportunities to worship with Christian siblings from around the world. However, England rightly is seen as a post-Christian culture. The cultural tensions increasingly pronounced in the United States are much more seasoned and rooted in England. As such, what often is taken for granted in the U.S. is not seen as reasonable in the U.K. This provides rich opportunities both to understand how others perceive Christians, as well as occasions to embody, exhibit, express, and explain one’s convictions.

Come and enjoy the local sites, sounds and stories that Oxford offers. Seasonal events punctuate the calendar while local attractions invite regular outings. This is the land of white witches and rings of power, of faith and disbelief, of religious and political strife, and of peaceable landscapes. During the term, in coordination with the Oxford Study Abroad Programme, several cultural excursions are offered. These have included outings to such destinations as Bath, Cambridge, Chatsworth House, Portsmouth, Stratford-upon-Avon, Stonehenge, and Warwick Castle.

Between the Summit Oxford worldview course and the Oxford tutorials, students typically have one week for travel. Usually students find cheap flights and ferries to Ireland or the Continent, to Scotland or to the Lake District. Just imagine the possible destinations.

At Summit Semester students will learn from some of the top Christian scholars in the country. Our environment will nurture spiritual formation and hone intellectual skills, while also helping our students develop strong interpersonal relationships. Our goal is to prepare students for the challenges they will face at the university while motivating them to be influential leaders,  shaping the ideas of culture for the glory of God and the good of our society.

Summit Semester Calendar

 Fall 2017

Application Status:
We are currently accepting applications for the Fall 2017 class.


The cost for this 12-week program is $10,995. This covers all classes, food, and lodging.  It does not include the cost for college credit (see below). Financial assistance is available. Please note: Due to IRS regulations and institutional eligibility requirements, Summit Semester is not able to provide 1098-T Tuition Statements for any tuition or fees paid.

Additional expenses include the $30 non-refundable application fee, travel to and from Snow Wolf Lodge, and incidentals ($300 is plenty if used wisely, and usually this will allow for a ski trip at the end of the semester).

College Credit

Summit Semester is pleased to offer students credits through Bryan College. Students have the option of receiving college credit for the work they do at Summit Semester.  The cost is $350 a course (3 credit hours) and is in addition to the tuition.

Bryan College will award three-hours of college credit for each of the following courses:

BIB 115: Biblical Foundations (3 credit hours)
ENG 115: Introduction to the Western Canon (3 credit hours)
CT 110 History of Christian Thought (3 credit hours)
PSGS 110: Politics & Religion (3 credit hours)

Summit Semester is proud to have Dr. Michael Bauman as our Scholar-in-Residence. Dr. Bauman comes to us from Hillsdale College, in Hillsdale, Michigan, where he is Professor of Theology and Culture and Director of Christian Studies. He also is a former president of the Evangelical Philosophical Society, and was once a member of the editorial department of Newsweek magazine. Dr. Bauman has published numerous books, articles and political editorials; his books include God and Man in the Twentieth Century, Man and Creation, and Are You Politically Correct?. He is a contributing editor for Ultra Cycling magazine and co-editor of The Schwarz Report. His latest books are 90 Days in the Christian Classics and Christianity A to Z.

Visiting Scholars:

Dr. Gary Hartenburg is director of Houston Baptist University’s honors college. Dr. Hartenburg specializes in ancient philosophy and generalizes in other areas of philosophy, theology, and liturature. His interest in ancient philosophy concerns the intersection of epistemology and metaphysics as well as the difference between knowledge and belief. When not reading works of and about the ancient philosophers, he enjoys reading poetry and novels, in particular the poetry of T. S. Eliot and the novels of Jane Austen and Leo Tolstoy. Dr. Hartenburg also enjoys teaching and thinking about business ethics, though he thinks that even that topic is best understood by reading through the ancient works on ethics.

Dr. Don Williams is the Director of the School of Arts and Sciences and Associate Professor of English at Toccoa Falls College, in Toccoa Falls, Georgia. Both an accomplished poet and literary critic, Dr. Williams is also a former president of the Evangelical Philosophical Society and an ordained minister in the Evangelical Free Church of America. He lectures widely on C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. In addition to his many valuable books including Inklings of Reality, Mere Humanity, and Credo: Meditations on the Nicene Creed, Dr. Williams’ articles have appeared in Touchstone and Modern Reformation.

Dr. Jeff Myers is president of Summit Ministries. He also serves as Distinguished Service Professor and Senior Fellow for Leadership Studies at Bryan College in Dayton, TN. Dr. Myers speaks to more than 50,000 people each year in corporations, schools, homeschool conferences, parent groups, and youth-serving organizations. Over the last decade, Dr. Myers has worked with Summit Ministries to develop cutting-edge leadership experiences in Colorado, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Alberta, Canada. Dr. Myers’ many books and video courses include the Understanding the Times series, Playpen to Podium, Secrets of Great Communicators, Secrets of the World-Changers, Secrets of Everyday Leaders, For Such a Time as This, Handoff, and Cultivate. Dr. Myers earned a Ph.D. in Communications from the University of Denver. He and his family live in Manitou Springs, CO.

Dr. Ken Turner is a Professor of Bible at Bryan College. After majoring in Physics & Math Education at Arizona State University, he attended The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he received his M.Div and Ph.D. in Old Testament Theology. He has published a book and several scholarly articles and is currently editing a book on Deuteronomy, writing a commentary on Habakkuk, and developing homeschool & church curricula on creation-evolution issues. Dr. Turner is married to Raegan and has 4 children.

Eric Smith loves to help students know God through a thorough understanding of the Bible. Since joining Summit in 2000, Eric has spoken to numerous groups on worldview, Bible, and Christian living topics. He teaches the Bible course at Summit’s Colorado Student Conferences and Summit Semester. In addition to teaching, Eric enjoys his role in program and staff development. He launched and led Summit Semester from 2006 to 2010, and has been on the leadership team of Summit’s Colorado Student Conferences since he joined Summit. Currently Eric is a member of the Adjunct Faculty at Bryan College, Dayton, TN. He holds a Masters of Divinity degree from Denver Seminary, and a B.S. in Business Administration from Miami University (OH).

Matthew Lee Anderson, M.Phil., is the founder of Mere Orthodoxy and the author of Earthen Vessels: Why Our Bodies Matter to Our Faith and The End of Our Exploring: A Book About Questioning and the Confidence of Faith. He is pursuing a D.Phil. in Christian Ethics at Oxford University, and lives in Waco, Texas, with his wife of ten years.

Dr. Steven Garber is the principal of The Washington Institute for Faith, Vocation & Culture, which is focused on reframing the way people understand life, especially the meaning of vocation and the common good. A consultant to foundations, corporations, and educational institutions, he is a teacher of many people in many places. The author of The Fabric of Faithfulness: Weaving Together Belief and Behavior, and Visions of Vocation: Common Grace for the Common Good, he is also a contributor to the books, Faith Goes to Work: Reflections from the Marketplace, and Get Up Off Your Knees: Preaching the U2 Catalogue. He lives with his wife Meg in Virginia.

Snow Wolf Lodge and Pagosa Springs provide many extracurricular activities. Our game room in the main lodge contains a pool table, ping-pong table, and two foosball tables. Outside we have a basketball court, sand volleyball, broomball equipment, Frisbee golf course, nearby trails and hundreds of acres for hiking in the San Juan National Forest.

In Pagosa Springs you will find the popular hot springs, shopping, scenic drives and hikes, and nearby attractions like Chimney Rock Archeological Site, Mesa Verde National Park, Great Sand Dunes National Park, as well as the mountain towns of Ouray, Silverton, and Durango. If it snows before the end of the semester (fall only), skiing at Wolf Creek or sledding on the Continental Divide will be available.


Our fall Summit Semester is located at Snow Wolf Lodge in the remote mountain wilderness of the San Juan National Forest near Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Ours is an intentionally and carefully crafted biblical worldview community similar to Francis Schaeffer’s L’Abri, where everyone on site will have daily responsibilities like meal preparation, cleaning, and routine facility maintenance. All of this will provide critical preparation needed for university life.

Snow Wolf Lodge provides two modern yet rustic buildings for our program. The female staff and students will live in the newest building, Blue Creek. This building provides 15 private rooms. Each female student will have one roommate. The large common area in Blue Creek serves as our classroom each morning and discussion area most evenings. The original structure on the site, our main lodge, houses the male staff and students as well as our kitchen, dining room,  game room, book store, and library. The men will stay in large rooms with three to five roommates, each with their own desk and study area.

Students and guests traveling to Snow Wolf Lodge may either bus or fly into Durango, Colorado. We will provide students with transportation at no charge from Durango to Snow Wolf Lodge (and back; about 1 hour and 30 minute travel time one way). Families may also drive to the Lodge, though students will not have use of their vehicles while attending Summit Semester (some exceptions allowed).



Summit Oxford is multidisciplinary in purview and students of all academic disciplines are encouraged to apply.  Typically, students should have earned at least two years of undergraduate credits and maintained a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.4. (There have been warranted exceptions to these prerequisites. However, they require strong letters of recommendation, persuasive reasons for applying, and a strong interview.)

While some factors are necessarily more important than others, seldom is any single criterion, however important, decisive. Important qualifications for admission are intellectual curiosity, demonstrated academic prowess, and motivation. Applicants must be devout Christians and dedicated students, exuding a passion for introducing others to the incarnate grace of God. They are expected to exhibit a Christian ambition not merely for one’s own advancement but especially for the well-being of others and the glory of God.  

Unlike many other study abroad programs, Summit Oxford is able to accommodate both undergraduate and graduate students, those currently enrolled and those not. Participants have ranged in age from late-teens to mid-thirties (though there is no upper limit).

For many students, a term in Oxford is the most challenging to date. Among our purposes is to ensure that students flourish rather than flounder in our program. To that end, the elements of the application and interview are vital.
