It is important to clarify something. Science does nothing. It is scientists who create breakthroughs using the disciplines of observing, repeating, and measuring to figure out more about the universe. Sometimes, though, they also use philosophy.
So what is really real? Here’s a baffling but revealing example about how Postmodernists approach the question. In 1991 French cultural theorist Jean Baudrillard wrote an essay, “The Gulf War Did Not Take Place” in which he claimed that the Gulf War was not real, but merely simulated for CNN television.
What is the meaning of meaning? Dr. Michael Bauman discusses two main concepts: ideas have consequences and bad ideas have bad consequences, and sloppy language makes sloppy thought possible. Bauman teaches students to think critically about beliefs that meaning is either authorial intent or the reader’s interpretation.
