Dangerous Samaritans: Poverty in America
In this lecture Michael Bauman discusses how we can aid the poor wisely. He speaks to programs such as welfare reform and minimum wage and how these concepts actually hinder rather than help the poor.

Socialism, Capitalism, and the Bible
Within the Christian church today, one can find a small by growing army of Protestants and Roman Catholics who have entered into an uncritical alliance with the political Left. The so-called liberation theologians not only promote a synthesis of Marxism and Christianity, but attempt to ground their recommended restrictions of economic and political freedom on their interpretation of the biblical ethic. A growing number of my own religious fellowship (those theologically conservative Protestants known as evangelicals) appear to stop just short of the more radical pronouncements of the liberation thinkers. These evangelicals of the Left are convinced that the biblical ethic obliges them to condemn capitalism and endorse the politics of statism and economics of socialism. Many writings from the Christian Left illustrate what can be called the proof-text method. What these writers normally do is isolate some vague passage (usually one from the Old Testament) that pertains to an extinct culture situation or practice. They then proceed to deduce some complex economic or political program from that text. My approach to the subject rejects the proof-text method and proceeds via three main steps. First...
Christian Economics
The Lord moves in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform. Surely the fact that someone from Pea Ridge, Arkansas — just south of Buzzard Glory, just west of Hog Scald Holler, just north of Hog Eye, and just east of Peavine — should address a gathering of scholars on the question "What is Christian economics?" demonstrates the old adage. Nonetheless, I hope this obscure Ozarkian might have something worth contributing to the discussion today...
The Dangerous Samaritans (via Imprimis)
We think we are doing the right thing. We think that if we pass laws to raise their wages and lower their rent, if we give generously to help support mothers without husbands and children without fathers, we can aid the poor in their flight from poverty and alleviate much of their distress. We are wrong...
A World Split Apart
I am sincerely happy to be here with you on the occasion of the 327th commencement of this old and illustrious university. My congratulations and best wishes to all of today's graduates. Harvard's motto is "VERITAS." Many of you have already found out, and others will find out in the course of their lives, that truth eludes us as soon as our concentration begins to flag, all the while leaving the illusion that we are continuing to pursue it. This is the source of much discord. Also, truth seldom is sweet; it is almost invariably bitter. A measure of truth is included in my speech today, but I offer it as a friend, not as an adversary...
Truth & Consequences
Fox and Friends and Free Markets
Dear Friends at Fox and Friends: The news item you mentioned Monday morning (Feb. 23, 2009) concerning the flap over high salaries paid to coaches and professors illustrates an underlying problem when reporting this kind of news. A little "worldview analysis" illumines the problem. Through Summit's unique "worldview" focus, we teach high school and college students a two-step approach to understanding what is happening in the public square. This same approach would also add depth and insight into your on-air discussions. Here's the skinny . . .
There Is No Economic Crisis
For the past couple of months the United States has been experiencing what we are told is an economic crisis. Indeed, stock markets are down considerably and the jobless rate is rising. Financial institutions are closing and the overall economy is slowing. The mantra of the media and many politicians pins the Wall Street meltdown on "corporate greed." We hear this mess was spawned by de-regulation of the banking industry. And there is a cry for the federal government to step in to make everything better, from fixing failing banks to bailing ailing auto manufacturers to propping up debt-ridden cities and consumers. While the blame game is in full gear, the average citizen is left in a fog to sort through the rhetoric. What to make of it all? What is the cause of our financial woes? And what is government's role in fixing it?
God and Government
It seems that all we hear from the campaign trail is constant bickering, blaming the other party for whatever the current national bad news happens to be, and personal attacks on political opponents. These tactics obscure the real issues and cause many Americans to grow weary of the rhetoric. To cut through the fog of political spin we need to get back to the basic ideas that are foundational to good government. To recall those basic concepts, let's start with a question. What would you say is the foundational document of the United States? It may come as a surprise, but according to a Newsweek cover story...
The Influence of the Secular Humanist Worldview
Secular Humanism (SH) is a well-defined worldview. The Humanist Manifestos of 1933, 1973, and 2000 explain the details of their beliefs. Topping the list is their belief that God does not exist, or at least there is insufficient evidence for the existence of God. From that theological foundation, Secular Humanists have developed a comprehensive view on various issues, including the nature of man, moral values, the role of the state, plus other areas. Over the past 75 years, Secular Humanists have exerted significance influence over a wide range of culture shaping arenas, including...
