Wrongful Birth? That’s Just Wrong.
They wish she’d never been born. From the Chuck Colson Center for Christian Worldview, I’m John Stonestreet with The Point.
What do you do when you order something from a store and when it comes, it’s all wrong? You demand your money back, of course. What do you do if you get a baby and it’s all wrong? Well, the Levy family of Portland, Oregon demanded their money back too. And a jury agreed, awarding the couple $2.9 million dollars for the “wrongful birth” of their daughter.
The Levy’s say they would have aborted their daughter had they known she had Down’s Syndrome. But, the prenatal testing did not reveal any abnormalities and the Levys were assured that their baby didn’t have the extra 21st chromosome. So, they gave birth to the child that wasn’t what they ordered.
Dr. Art Caplan, a bioethicist writing on MSNBC calls wrongful birth lawsuits “morally absurd.” But they’re not. They’re morally wrong and morally abhorrent, but not absurd. They’re the logical consequence of a culture that treats babies like something you order, and puts price tags on human life which is priceless. For thePointRadio.org, I’m John Stonestreet.
