The New Norm: Illegitimacy

There’s no sugar-coating it. This is very bad news. I’m John Stonestreet, and this is The Point.

Last week the New York Times reported a sobering statistic: For the first time in American history, the majority of children born to women in their 20s were born outside of marriage.

The implications of this are dizzying, and the article makes no attempt to downplay them. Children of unwed or single parents are more likely to suffer from poverty, bad grades, emotional and behavioral disorders, and even medical problems. The overwhelming majority also repeat their parents’ patterns, rejecting family and commitment on a generational level.

The single mothers interviewed for the article expressed bitterness toward marriage, their parents, and the men who fathered their children. “Most of my friends say [marriage] is just a piece of paper,” said one, “and it doesn’t work out anyway.”

But the facts say otherwise. That “piece of paper” means that parents are more than twice as likely to stay together, and that their children avoid a whole host of social and economic ills. We’ll talk more about this tomorrow. For The PointRadio.org I’m John Stonestreet.
