Pregnant with a Neanderthal
A baby with a Neanderthal? Huh? . For the Chuck Colson Center for Christian Worldview, I’m John Stonestreet with The Point.
Harvard Medical professor George Church thinks he can reconstruct the genetic information of the now extinct Neanderthals, inject the genes into human embryonic stem cells, and implant the resulting embryo into a female volunteer willing to carry the child to term.
In the extremely unlikely event this project gets the green light from a lab, overcomes legal challenges, clears medical hurdles, and succeeds in producing a viable baby, the greatest problem remains: what is the moral status of a part-Neanderthal child? Will it be considered human by society and under the law? And what will the child think of our scientific hubris?
These worldview questions, if not forced by this crazy experiment will be with other technologies like designer babies — which are very real possibilities. The challenges to human dignity go beyond abortion. If we don’t address them now, Neanderthals and human dignity could share a common fate. I’m John Stonestreet.
