On Courage and Being the Loudest

On Courage and Being the Loudest

We need more than volume in these debates... For the Chuck Colson Center for Christian Worldview, I’m John Stonestreet with The Point.

Last week, Timothy Dalrymple at Patheos.com attracted a lot of attention by his post entitled, “If You’re Selling Scorn for Conservatives, the Market is Hot.” In the post he names a few writers and bloggers who have garnered huge responses to posts big on anger and caricature, and small on real arguments.

When I posted the article on my FaceBook page, I got a big response. A good summary of the common sentiment was by my friend Chris who said, “The louder voices tend to be the most intolerant and keep people apart.” He’s got a point, but I’d argue we have a responsibility to recognize the best voices.

So, we shouldn’t hold up the crazies on the other side as being representative. Instead, we should acknowledge those making careful, reasoned arguments.

Archbishop Timothy Dolan’s CBS interview about the HHS Contraception mandate and lawsuit a few weeks ago is a brilliant example of a calm, reasoned and courageous response. I’ll link to it at thePointRadio.org.   Watch and learn. I’m John Stonestreet.
