Just Not True
Actually, the history of Western Civilization doesn’t show that. For the Chuck Colson Center for Christian Worldview, I’m John Stonestreet with The Point.
Apparently, the Freedom from Religion Foundation not only wants to replace Christian expression from the public square with the religion of atheism, they also want to change history. According to their website: “The history of Western civilization shows us that most social and moral progress has been brought about by persons free from religion. In modern times the first to speak out for prison reform, for humane treatment of the mentally ill, for abolition of capital punishment, for women's right to vote, for death with dignity for the terminally ill… have been freethinkers, just as they were the first to call for an end to slavery.”
To which I reply, huh? Folks it’s just not true. Take a look at Rodney Stark’s books “The Victory of Reason” and “For the Glory of God,” or Dinesh D’Souza’s “What’s So Great About Christianity,” and you’ll find out what really motivated social and moral progress. It wasn’t atheism. What atheism motivated were the worst evils of the 20th century. For thePointRadio.org, I’m John Stonestreet.
