Francis Schaeffer

Happy Birthday to someone who made a Big Difference.   I’m John Stonestreet, and this is The Point.

The first time I ever heard of Francis Schaeffer was in my 11th grade history class at a small Christian high school in Virginia. In my teenage cynicism, I quickly dismissed the How Should We Then Live teaching videos and the legendary man teaching in it the moment I saw his strange beard and stranger knickers. It’s one of the great regrets of my life that I did not listen to the man who so deeply influenced 20th century Christianity.

In God’s great kindness, I did learn from Schaeffer eventually -- though at first only indirectly. I learned at the feet and from the books of those who learned at his feet and from his books: Gary Phillips, Bill Brown, David Noebel, Nancy Pearcey, Jim Sire, Os Guinness, Chuck Colson, and many more.

Schaeffer awoke a generation to an intellectual faith and alarmed them about the encroaching of secularism and the evil that is abortion. He impacted all of us, even those of us who slept through his videos. For thePointRadio.org, I’m John Stonestreet.
