Comfortably Numb

Addiction is on the rise, according to psychologist Jean Pollack in a recent article on PsychologyToday.com, but not just to drugs. Americans are addicted to everything from porn to chocolate to texting to each other. At least one study indicates that seeing a milkshake activates the same region of the brain for some people as cocaine does for drug addicts. Pollack claims people use these addictions to numb the stress and frustration we experience, and her solution? “Live more creatively to have a calm and peaceful rhythm.”

Today’s world is painful, but this isn’t new. Pain is inevitable in a world fractured by sin. What we call addictions are often idols – worshipping the creation (ourselves) instead of the creator, as Paul says in Romans. Idol worship is addictive, and ultimately unfulfilling because we were made for God not idols. “Living creatively” will not heal this type of spiritual damage. Being reconciled will.
