Session 4 | Day 3a
Hey ya’ll! Surrounded by Mid-Westerners and Southerners, I have begun to adopt a slight twang. It’s a shame I cannot convey an accent here through the computer! However, I hope I can give you a little insight into what made Summit awesome today (for me).
Our second speaker to was Dr. Jeff Myers, who spoke on “The Whole Truth about Love, Sex, Marriage (and Kids).” He began with the creation story, shining a new light on the well-known passage (Gen 2:15-25). Dr. Myers highlighted how God designed men and women for specific purposes: the man is made from the earth to subdue the earth (work), and the woman is made from the man to help him! Dr. Myers also focused on the family and how it is the basis for society. When a man and a woman marry, they leave their families, establishing a new family government (Gen 2:24-25). The children they raise are intended to crush Satan. In Genesis 3:15 God said, “I will put enmity between you [Satan] and the woman, between her offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” Since families breed Satan-crushers, it makes sense that Satan would do everything possible to destroy the family, which is exactly what he is doing!
Myers had us view the situation from the Devil’s point of view. He asked us, “If you were they Devil, how would you kill the family? What would you attack?” His list consisted of, but was not limited to, killing babies, divorce, promiscuity, homosexuality, making people fear or despise marriage, and “alternatives” to marriage. All these things not only exist, but are also rampant in America! It struck me that the Devil is not just the “bad guy” to be blamed for making people sin and spreading evil, but he is intentional about destruction. There truly is a battle from both sides, which means we must be equally, if not more, intentional about counteracting Satan’s attacks and keeping the basis for society from crumbling. For all the intensity and urgency I sensed from Dr. Myers’ lecture, he also gave us practical ways to continue crushing Satan’s designs. (By the way, Dr. Myers is hilarious, not a “doom man” at all!) He encouraged us to: 1. Understand that this is ultimately a battle of worldviews; 2. Live out our God-given design (different for men and women); 3. Commit to purity of body and mind; 4. Model the love of Christ; 5. love kids; and 6. Be reconciled to each other, especially within our own families. How can we fight against the enemy if with are divided within ourselves? Dr. Myers’ lecture was chock-full of information, hilarity, and encouragement. Listening to him give a perspective I had never heard on passages I am so familiar with, and it was enlightening. It is so important to understand the crucial role of family, how it is being attacked, and why. The lecture was so relevant and so applicable, I will not forget it soon. I am encouraged to live out the purpose God has designed me for and band together with my family to shut down the Devil from keeping me, or anyone else, from accomplishing it. I hope I was able to pass on a little bit of the excitement I get from the lectures here.
Please pray for your kid and the rest of us, that we may absorb as much as we can while we are here and put it into practice when we get home! We have been listening to so many great lectures that we don’t want to forget anything!
