Session 3 | Day 5
Today radio show host Hugh Hewitt gave us enough reading material to keep us busy for the next sixteen weeks, according to Dr. Noeble's book-a-week policy. The authors ranged from scientists to philosophers to Winston Churchill. He also gave us a number of tips in the vein of How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. Life lessons always sound better in a radio voice, don't ask me why. In the afternoon, we had self-proclaimed smart-alec Dr. Frank Beckwith, who gave us his philosophical perspective on atheism, abortion, and other not so touchy subjects. When he talked about the difference between the physical brain in your head and the hard to grasp concept of your mind and the thoughts that no surgeon can extract, I nearly had an aneurism.
All kidding aside (and there is plenty to go around, mostly thanks to the speakers), my experience at Summit has been amazing this far. Barring a bear or hippie attack, I see no reason that the steady stream of insight and knowledge from both peers and speakers will stop. I have the opportunity to get thoughts from many different educated men on any subject on my mind. The small group setting is relaxed, but we are always left with a challenging thought or two. Tonight we looked at The Dangerous Book For Boys by Conn and Hal Iggulden. My eleven year old brother has this book, but I haven't read it. After touching a few sections (namely the Latin phrases, invisible inks, and girls), I decided I may have to purloin it from him. I have it from a reliable source (who will remain unnamed) that purloin is the Christian word for steal.
The meals are great, the showers are hot, and the people and the weather are friendly and warm. I feel like these two weeks are going to come to end far too soon. I just hope we make another Wal-Mart run, I need some more ginger ale.
